German defender Mats Hummels has confirmed he will retire from football at the end of the season.

Roma defender Mats Hummels, 36, has confirmed in a video on his social media channels his decision to retire from football when his contract expires this summer. 

‘I will miss it, I will miss it a lot,’ Hummels said of his decision to call time on his career at the end of this season.

Hummels made his Bundesliga debut for Bayern Munich in 2007 and has since made 508 appearances in all competitions for Borussia Dortmund, 118 for Bayern Munich, 78 for Germany and 18 for Roma this season. 

‘It takes a lot of things, just having the right coach at the right time, being fit at the right time. The right teammates at the right time, and I’ve met a lot of players and coaches, and I owe a lot to them.’

‘Without them, my football career would never have reached this level.’ 

During his 19-season career, Hummels won six Bundesliga titles (four with Bayern Munich and two with Dortmund), four DFB-Pokal titles (two with Bayern Munich and two with Dortmund) and the 2014 World Cup.
